Ultraviolet B radiation is considered to be the main environmental carcinogen causing skin cancer, and ultraviolet B radiation is often used in simulation experiments.

The researchers gave the mice daily oral supplements of NMN (300 mg/kg), Lactobacillus fermentum (1.0×109 CFU/ml), vitamin C (300 mg/kg), or a mixture of NMN and Lactobacillus fermentum, and The mice were exposed to UVB (120 mJ/cm2/hour) radiation for 2 hours per day in the third and fourth weeks.

It was found that ultraviolet B radiation damaged and thinned the dermis of the mouse skin, the number of collagen fiber bundles was significantly reduced, the arrangement of subcutaneous tissue was disordered, and the infiltration of inflammatory cells could be seen around the appendages.

The skin tissue of mice given both NMN and L. fermentum was most similar to that of mice without UVB radiation, and the skin protection effect was better than that of NMN, L. fermentum or vitamin C (300 mg/kg) alone.

In addition, the number of mast cells (cells indicative of inflammation) in the dermis increased fourfold after exposure to UVB radiation, suggesting that UVB induces skin inflammation.

When vitamin C, NMN or Lactobacillus fermentum were supplemented alone, the number of mast cells decreased; however, the number of mast cells decreased the most in the group supplemented with NMN and Lactobacillus fermentum at the same time, indicating that NMN and Lactobacillus fermentum have a synergistic effect and can reduce skin inflammation.

In-depth research can be carried out in the future to further explore the mechanism of synergy between NMN and Lactobacillus fermentum, as well as its protective effect in humans.
