Muscle injury is very common in daily life. When you exercise vigorously or excessively, it will inevitably cause muscle damage. This acute muscle injury usually recovers after two or three days.
But in our body, there is a special muscle, it is called the levator ani muscle, which exists at the bottom of the pelvis and is responsible for supporting the entire pelvis. We often say that the levator ani exercise exercises this muscle.
The reason why the levator ani muscle is special is that it is difficult to damage and recover. Only in the case of pregnancy, childbirth and increased abdominal pressure can huge mechanical stress be formed, which will cause levator ani muscle injury.
Therefore, women after childbirth tend to have levator ani muscle injuries, but in most cases it is difficult to detect, and only pelvic floor dysfunction caused by severe injury will be noticed.
Last year, in human clinical studies in China, the United States, and Japan, NMN showed an improvement effect on muscles. Therefore, many scientists speculated that NMN may improve the function of the levator ani muscle, thereby preventing pelvic floor dysfunction.

Recently, researchers from the People's Hospital of Wuhan University published their research results in Animal Cells and Systems. They used experiments to confirm the speculation that NMN supplementation can rescue levator ani muscle damage by improving mitochondrial function.
To verify the effect of NMN, the researchers treated myoblasts with 500 μM NMN solution for 24 h after they were subjected to excessive mechanical stress, and conducted a control study.
The results showed that NMN treatment did not affect the mitochondrial function of normal myoblasts, but had a good recovery effect on damaged myoblasts after excessive mechanical stress.
The same is true in terms of cell viability, NMN supplementation had no effect on the viability of normal myoblasts, but significantly improved the viability of myoblasts subjected to excessive mechanical stress.
The improvement and repair effect of NMN on the levator ani muscle tissue is undoubtedly good news for women who are troubled by pelvic floor dysfunction, and it also makes people look forward to the results of further research and application.
