Glutathione (GSH) is an important antioxidant in the body. It protects the sulfhydryl groups in proteins or enzyme molecules in the body from oxidation and keeps the proteins or enzymes in an active state. 

This is specifically reflected in the following aspects:

(1) For red blood cells, GSH plays an extremely important role in protecting the integrity of the red blood cell membrane. For example, in people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, their red blood cells cannot obtain sufficient NADPH through the pentose phosphate pathway, making it difficult for glutathione to function. (2) It has hepatoprotective effect. GSH has antioxidant and detoxifying effects. The sulfhydryl group in the GSH molecule is an active group and can easily interact with certain drugs (such as paracetamol), toxins (such as free radicals, iodoacetic acid, mustard gas), heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, etc.) etc., and have an integrated detoxification effect. (3) Glutathione can also help maintain normal immune system function. In recent years, a large number of studies have shown that GSH can promote the proliferation of lymphocytes and monocytes and play an important role in anti-infection and inflammatory responses.

(4) Protect eye vision. GSH helps maintain the transparency of the cornea and lens and the repair and regeneration of their tissues. It is also commonly used to treat cataracts, corneal diseases, and retinopathy.

(5) The sulfhydryl group of GSH has nucleophilic properties and can combine with external electrophilic poisons (such as carcinogens or drugs), thus blocking the binding of these substances to DNA, RNA or proteins to protect the body from poisonous damage.
