The role of adenosylmethionine in the treatment of liver diseases

Adenosylmethionine is a natural active substance found in the body. As the most important methyl donor in the body, adenosylmethionine can participate in important biochemical reactions in the body through transmethylation, transthiolation and transaminopropylation. Ademetionine can be used to treat various liver diseases such as cholestasis, drug-induced liver injury and alcoholic liver disease, and can significantly improve the depressive symptoms associated with liver diseases. In addition, adenosylmethionine also has anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and other therapeutic effects.

1. Intrahepatic cholestasis
Cholestasis is a syndrome characterized by partial or complete bile block caused by hepatic and/or capillary bile secretion disorders caused by various reasons, common causes include viral hepatitis, DILI, primary biliary Liver cirrhosis, alcoholic liver poisoning and pregnancy. Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy can easily lead to fetal distress, premature delivery, neonatal asphyxia and even perinatal death.

2. Drug-induced liver injury
The pathogenesis of DILI is relatively complicated and is not yet clear, and anti-tuberculosis drugs and chemotherapy drugs can cause liver damage. In recent years, the morbidity and mortality of DILI in China have been rising continuously, and the treatment and early prevention of DILI have attracted more and more attention. DILI can cause abnormal metabolism of adenosylmethionine, resulting in the lack of adenosylmethionine in the body, resulting in obstacles to transmethylation and transsulfuration, decreased fluidity of liver cell membranes, decreased bile secretion, accumulation of bilirubin, and at the same time caused by glutathione synthesis. As the amount of bile acid decreases, the stasis of bile acid in the liver cells further damages the liver cells. Supplementing exogenous adenosylmethionine can help restore liver cell function and promote bile excretion in the liver. Supplementing adenosylmethionine as soon as possible can alleviate the symptoms of fatigue, anorexia, yellow urine and skin itching in patients with drug-induced cholestatic hepatitis, and restore liver function early.

3. Alcoholic liver disease
Alcoholic liver disease includes alcoholic fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis and alcoholic cirrhosis. Alcoholic liver disease has a high incidence in my country, second only to viral hepatitis. Adenosylmethionine can promote the production of active substances such as glutathione, enhance the antioxidant and detoxification ability of the liver, and improve the liver damage caused by alcohol. Studies have shown that adenosylmethionine can significantly reduce the content of active oxygen in cells and reduce liver cell damage.
